About Janice

I am a minister with active standing in the United Church of Christ, ordained in 1983. Currently, I am the Minister of Spiritual Formation at University Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in Missoula, Montana.

I have served these churches:

    conservative church in rural Missouri,
    moderate church in small town Iowa,
    progressive church in urban Michigan,
    university churches in Iowa and Montana (part-time)

My ministry has been well-received in each of these diverse communities. The work I do does not seem to fit in the usual categories of traditional or contemporary, liberal or conservative. I am radical in my commitment to justice and traditional in my commitment to prayer.

I have a passion for helping clergy and churches to deepen their worship and strengthen their community. I have been able to help people reclaim the faith when they have been wounded by it, or feel they have outgrown it, or have found themselves bored in it.

I love to facilitate a connection between the people and God…and then get out of the way and let the people and God go to it. I honor the language and practices of the tradition, but interpret them in expansive ways, making room for contemporary understandings of timeless wisdom.

I draw from other faith traditions to help us go more deeply into our own. I use many names for God, for Ultimate Reality, the Holy Mystery that permeates our world and our lives.

I follow the ways of Jesus, who expresses the universal through the particular, the divine through the human.
I fill my life—and my preaching and teaching—with things like these:

    laughter;
    beauty;
    poetry, literature and books;
    out of the box ideas and broader, deeper models of reality;
    challenges to the dominant culture;
    music and the arts;
    and especially love.

Currently, through writing, teaching and leading workshops and retreats, I am helping clergy and faith communities move deeper into worship, deeper into prayer, deeper into community, deeper into God. I live in Frenchtown, Montana and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
